Dear Queen

Bask in the shade.

Shade is simply a reflection of your light.

Position your head high, as that shade-light shines upon you.

As it eases off your melanin like sweet juice of summertime watermelon.

Sticking to your shadow like honey due.

The ones behind you use your light to help get them through.

Your skin was designed to take the heat.

So chill and slowly pull your fingers through your artfully braided do

designed by your bootylicious, illest of the realist hair stylist Tasha-mack who

creates conversations full of positivity, from her go-getta mentality to her perception of reality.

Dear Queen…

I see you stressing over there, pulling out the edges of your hair, worrying if there’s a man out there somewhere willing to take away your worries, love you and care. Well I’m here to tell you baby girl STOP DREAMING! GET YOUR ASS UP NOW! YOU GOT GOALS TO ACCOMPLISH! Don’t let me have to tell you again. Love you girl.

Yes, the way my mind is set up I really did wonder what would happen if ALL African American women could reflect molasses? What do I mean by this? Well, what if we all formed a thick texture between us from our brown beautiful sweet melanin, raw strength, and mentality? Imagine the number of people we could feed and delicacies we could create when all the impurities and unwanted elements are removed.

Yesterday I had an encounter with an African American woman who was so bitter that she could not even accept a compliment from myself to her. I acknowledged her beauty and complimented on her job well done with raising her children as they were very respectful and kind toward me. She disregarded my compliments and continued to complain about her issues. I listened to her as she spoke and threw subliminal shade toward me while at the same time stating, “I have nothing against you.” This woman had become so blinded and manipulated by her own pain that she believed it was healing her. Ouch! Now, please know that I can only recognize this because I am a retired master of it. I used to be her. I was good at not seeing the God in the good but seeing the enemy in the good. I trained my mind to believe that everyone who came my way for good was after something else. This came from years of being hurt and lied to by others. I held on to the baggage. It piled up and eventually weighed on me so much I had no choice but to get rid of it.

After we finished speaking, I was upset. Not because she didn’t say thank you or because she threw so much shade my way but because this is my sister, granted I don’t know her at all but she’s another woman whose roots stem from the same continent as me. Then I wondered, how can we love our children enough to raise them but not love ourselves enough to let go of past pain for their sake? Isn’t the weight of jealousy too much? Aren’t we tired of dragging envy everywhere?

We are living in a world full of mental and physical shackles, how is it that we African American women are not looking out for each other more than what we are? I found my answers to those questions once again within in the word molasses, however this time I dug deeper into the history of it.

“Sugar’s most bitter legacy is that the labor of slaves caused the enslavement of even more Africans.”

– Jean M. West, Sugar and Slavery

You see where I’m headed with this whole molasses thing? Sugar which is sweet represents us African American women. Molasses which is sweet and thick in texture represents African American women united. Our most bitter legacy is the labor of slavery. This bitterness we carry is part of our legacy or history. So much so it runs through our genes which explains why it flows from us so naturally?

At the beginning of this blog post, I introduced the idea of re-defining how we treat each other by defining the unity of African American women through the definition of molasses. In the end, I explained the reason for the lack of unity of African American women through the history of molasses.

The goal is that you never look at molasses and African American women the same again. That every time you see or hear the word molasses, you think of an African American woman’s sweet texture and shackled history. Understand that although it is a choice for us to treat each other kindly we must over stand the years of hurt that we are against. It is not easy for every one of us to step into that thick texture of brown beautiful sweet melanin, raw strength, and mentality.

[df_divider_text title=”Empowering Women” title_align=”separator_align_center” el_width=”100″ style=”solid” accent_color=”#EEEEEE” padding=”20px 0″ position=”align_center” el_class=”” border_t_width=”2px”]

It’s moments like the one that happened yesterday that make me appreciate being part of an empowering women’s group where the love is genuine. There is no hate or shade and our mission is to genuinely love and inspire other women to break the years of enslavement of our natural pure molasses.

I spoke in Florence, South Carolina at a Women’s Conference at Central Missionary Baptist Church. The theme was Essence of Love. Initially, I had trouble deciding what I was going to speak about when it came to that particular topic. I sat and thought about the word Essence. I said the word over and over again in my mind and out loud. In due time…

[df_divider el_width=”100″ style=”solid” accent_color=”#EEEEEE” border_t_width=”2px” padding=”20px 0″ position=”align_center” el_class=””]

‘Essence’ became a sense as in common sense.

Then sense became cents… as in dollars & cents.

Then cent became scent as in a distinctive smell.

I began to wonder what common sense would God speak to us when it came to our idea of the price or cost of love?

What scent are we giving off?

What love aroma is lingering behind us when we walk?

Ephesians 5:2 says walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

After reading this verse I imagined God saying,

“Y’all out here becoming successful entrepreneurs in the selfish love business.

Selling and marketing love genuinely but reaping the benefits and profiting from it selfishly.

Selling and marketing love genuinely but reaping the benefits and profiting from it selfishly.

Y’all out here taking selfies with each other, calling her your sister, hashtagging I love her then turn around and subliminally dissing her mother.”

I imagined God saying,

“What about beautifully coming together in unity? Real love is about the response when your personal limelight is being threatened.”

I imagined God saying,

“Some of y’all may be uncomfortable with the Soul Survivor Writer’s message today but her life’s purpose consists of delivering to congregations in the realest of the real way for the sake of re-writing and re-righting LOVE history and claiming victory over the true essence of love through unity.”

So after all this came to me I knew I needed to deliver a poem I had written, One Vision. Not only speak it but teach it. I needed to make sure each line was beyond just heard.

[df_divider el_width=”100″ style=”solid” accent_color=”#EEEEEE” border_t_width=”2px” padding=”20px 0″ position=”align_center” el_class=””]

One Vision

The world. Full of US but can we share one vision?

Can we keep faith at the center, communicate better, and stop ego trippin’?

Diverse eyes watching diverse lives pass away because we’re afraid to come together on one mission.

We’d rather hold a grudge, be jealous, gossip and judge.

Meanwhile Friends, strangers, and loved ones hungry for an ear to take heed and listen.

God confirmed my intuition through a young boy on YouTube, pleading to his mother, “Listen, Linda, Listen!”

We out here trying to put pieces together in search of the main ones missing.

Walking by beggars with no eye contact, hatin’ and dissin’.

It’s not rocket science, or some complicated arithmetic.

First ask oneself the reason for the trials and tribulations.

Next hold close to the details of all conversations;

Then study the moves of the “holy” and “sanctified” population.

Do their moves consists of participation and dedication to those coping with personal starvation hateration, low self-esteem frustration – or like me, child molestation?

We must pay attention to details. Body language, messages, and voice tones whether it be over the phone or sitting in front of someone at home.

We must learn to be observant and ten steps ahead conversant.

Our people are hurting. They are scared. The pressure is heavy!

This life ain’t easy!

So with no hesitation we must choose to make a reservation, and encourage each other to discover that self-innovation.

For we never know the condition of one’s link to self-ammunition;

For we never know the condition of one’s link to self-ammunition;

Or over-stand the intrusion of the delusions that lead to so much confusion.

People are hurting. They are scared. The pressure is heavy! This life ain’t easy!

We are ALL searching for perfection through constant correction, in hopes we’re headed in the right direction.

The world. Full of US but can we share one vision?

Can we keep faith at the center, communicate better, and stop ego trippin’?

I imagine God saying, “The TRUE aroma of a scent of love is knowing the sense in my agape love.”

Kpachara anya gi

Is an Igbo proverb my father taught me that his mother would say to him. What’s interesting about Igbo proverbs and stories is that they can have various meanings. This proverb literally means ‘take your eye’ however it also means:

“Ensure your eyes are open”

“Remain alert”

“Be mindful”

Now why would I say remain alert and be mindful, then put the words “Black Power” after it? Here’s another question, how many Africans do you see from Africa walking around in colorful dashikis yelling “Black Power!” and proclaiming how “black” they are? Better yet how many Africans from Africa are on social media ranting about their mistreatment from someone of another race or ethnicity? Now please do not misinterpret what I’m saying here. The black power movement that occurred in 1950s and early 1960s was something in a way I wish I could have experienced and has paved the way for us, especially the Black Panthers. The movement was a true reflection of how powerful we are. Today it’s like the term ‘black’ has become just something to say. I’m guilty of it myself at times, which is why I wrote this blog post.

And now that I am thinking about it, I realize since birth I have never heard my father, uncles, aunts, or even grandparents say or mention “Black Power”. Their walk is power; Their accent. Their language. Their mentality. The way they teach us (children). The stories they tell. The proverbs they pass down. Now I have heard my father say, “People judge me initially but once I speak and they hear my accent their demeanor changes. They become respectful–they get friendly.” My father has also said to me, “Black says nothing about you. Not even “African American” says anything about you. You are Nigerian American.”

Africa is a continent, full fifty-four countries, from Algeria to Zimbabwe, languages, beliefs, foods, principles, proverbs, cultures, style of clothing, etc. According to my father the dashiki that African Americans wear, relates to a group of people in Nigeria called the Hausa people. Wikipedia explains the word dashiki further. The name dashiki is derived from the Hausa word ʼdan ciki, which means shirt.

This spiked my curiosity and I immediately wanted to dig deeper into the various styles of traditional Hausa attire. A popular style worn by Traditional Hausa-Fulani is very long and the sleeves are loose and kind of cut off.

Am I against dashikis?

No, they are beautiful. Have I ever worn one? No. Will I ever wear one? Probably not. What I will surely wear is my Igbo Nigerian traditional attire that will or has been specially designed for me by my aunt who sews, or a professional Nigerian tailor.

My point in all this is let’s open our eyes so we can see the African culture for what it truly is. Just because we wear a dashiki or in proper terms a dan ciki doesn’t make us more or less powerful. Let’s not get caught up in the hype of the “Black Power” business (believe it or not it is a business) so much so that we drift away from our true roots. Remember being African or of African descent is about knowledge, strength, values, and culture. That is our true power. Many African Americans who are going hard for Africa can’t name up to ten countries in Africa. Many Americans going hard for “Black Power” are still calling Africa a country.

Animal Symbology: A rabbit is a representation of fear because fearful thoughts reproduce like rabbits. If you see Rabbit or in any way feel attracted to him, it may be telling you to wait for the forces of the universe to start moving again, to stop worrying and to get rid of your fears.

[df_divider el_width=”100″ style=”solid” accent_color=”#EEEEEE” border_t_width=”2px” padding=”20px 0″ position=”align_center” el_class=””]

A friend said to me, “Now your world is free from Bitchassness”.

This made me wonder, what the world would be like without Bitchassness. I’ve heard the term before on the MTV show Making the Band, however before diving into it on a deeper level, I had to make sure my knowledge of the origins of the term ‘Bitchassness’ was accurate. According to Urban Dictionary. The term was originated by recording artist Diddy aka Sean John Combs aka Puff Daddy aka P.Diddy.

Symptoms include: thinking you’re better than those around you, not speaking your true feelings, throwing large amounts of shade.

Check out Diddy’s Bitchassness Alert Level Orange Video. It’s hysterical but so REAL at the same time! Looks blurry but it’s really not. Goes to show how long ago this video was made, that’s for sure.

So bottom line, what it all boils down to is fear. Fear is the main virus out here killing us. It’s a virus that kills dreams and stops us from becoming GREAT.

The government is run on bitchassness

Proper laws are not enforced because of bitchassness

Homeless people are on the street because of bitchassness

Babies are parentless because of bitchassness

Black men in America are dying because of bitchassness

Terrorists are attacking because of bitchassness

Roads in my dad’s Nigerian Arondizuogu village are not maintained because of bitchassness

AIDS in Africa is thriving because of bitchassness

Children are committing suicide because of bitchassness

Then my mind took me off on a tangent. I wondered if there was no bitchassness what would replace it. Faith?

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, faith is defined as:

:strong belief or trust in someone or something

: belief in the existence of God : strong religious feelings or beliefs

: a system of religious belief

To me the words that pop out are trust, belief, strong, and God

Imagine a world completely full of faith through our own Godliness and no fear. What then would motivate one to be great?

To want to change something or have an impact

To want to push harder because society’s bitchassness said you couldn’t

To want to unite people as one and protest

To create art that makes people think outside the box

To experience a bitchassness moment,

write a piece inspired by that moment,

and inspire someone else.

To have faith in self and want to be great through that piece.

Like my works of art, everything comes full circle. Without fear there would be no faith. Without bitchassness there would be no greatness. The reality is faith (trust, belief, strength, God) removes the fear and allows us to be great. If you haven’t gained anything from this post at least take the title with you. Oh! And that damn rabbit too.

FEAR is to BITCHASSNESS as FAITH is to GREATNESS

They say you have to look over your shoulder at where you’ve been to truly know how far you’ve come and how much you need to push to never go back. Right now I’m about 25% in on the vision. It was on June 1st, 2014 that I made the decision that changed my life. I am on this path-hungry. To anything trying to get in my way, look into my eyes, fear my determination as I will savagely attack you and make you my prey.

AND IT’S ALL IN MY HEAD … A PSYCHOLOGIST & JOURNALIST INTERVIEWING A “PATIENT” WHO IDENTIFIES AS THE HUMAN MIND RESERVE :

PSYCHOLOGIST: Hello, I’m your psychologist. I’m here to talk to you today with a journalist about why you call your mind a human mind reserve. Can you explain to us?

PATIENT: My mind is a human mind reserve. It’s a place where people come who want to save their mind from extinction.

JOURNALIST: So basically you believe your mind saves other minds from what you call mind extinction. Do you think that’s abnormal?

PATIENT: Listen! There’s a method to my madness. The method is to say the “craziest” shit to inspire someone to create genius shit!

JOURNALIST: What do you mean by that? Give me an example.

PATIENT: Look! Not everything is to be understood. You look at an abstract painting by Jean-Michel Basquait, can you interpret this? Let me ask you two questions. Are you a journalist?

JOURNALIST: Yes I am.

PATIENT: Are you writing about me?

JOURNALIST: Yes I am.

PATIENT: My point exactly!

Journalist gives a puzzled expression and writes in a notebook. Psychologist reaches for a manilla folder. Patient takes a mind interlude.

[df_divider_text title=”Mind Interlude” title_align=”separator_align_center” el_width=”100″ style=”solid” accent_color=”#EEEEEE” padding=”20px 0″ position=”align_center” el_class=”” border_t_width=”2px”]

[df_divider_text title=”Mind Interlude Complete” title_align=”separator_align_center” el_width=”100″ style=”solid” accent_color=”#EEEEEE” padding=”20px 0″ position=”align_center” el_class=”” border_t_width=”2px”]

PSYCHOLOGIST (opens manilla folder): Do you know anyone else who has the mind of a human Mind Reserve?

PATIENT: Several. Most are categorized as crazy. Very few are recognized as living legends. Many become legends after they die. I cannot give out any names. All you need to know is I ask questions that people think they don’t have the answers to so they can find the answer, create the answer, or simply say, “Forget what you think, this is what I believe and I will die for it! Period.” These are thoughts and characteristics that are endanger amongst the masses. I taint with egos and the idea of right and wrong. You want to know my trick?

PSYCHOLOGIST: Yes please share, what’s your trick?

PATIENT: You see the key is to appear to always want to be right which pushes people to challenge me to be right or wrong. When in all actuality I believe in neither. I believe in the story.

PSYCHOLOGIST: Do you think it’s wrong for a child to hit an adult?

PATIENT: It depends on the story.

JOURNALIST: Do you think it was wrong for whites to have slaves?

PATIENT: It depends on the person’s story. “Blacks” had slaves. Was it wrong for Martin Luther King to believe in non-violence? Was it wrong for Malcolm X to believe in violence? Is it wrong for people to walk around with Confederate flags? Is it wrong for people to walk around with rainbow flags? Was Huey P. Newton wrong to rape and beat Black Panther members who came to his apartment after they helped release him from prison? Was it wrong for my father to take me from my mother? Listen to the story. The mistake is when we classify an idea or belief in something as right or wrong. Let’s stop tying our minds to those chains of destruction.

JOURNALIST: So you think that if there was no wrong or right in the world everyone would be happy?

PATIENT: Our beliefs are based on experiences of another person or ourselves. It is how we use words that divides us. I’ve had conversations with people and never used the words wrong or right but the minute I begin to challenge them with questions it turns into this idea of me wanting to be right and thinking I’m better. Why didn’t the person initially acknowledge the act of me asking them questions as a gesture, a kind act, an awesome way to inspire great thoughts? It is because we have lived in this system that has trained our minds to divide us between two words-RIGHT or WRONG. You are interviewing me because society has trained your mind to believe that people are “crazy”. So basically if it weren’t for me you wouldn’t have a job. So you work for me. I am your boss. I tell you what to do. (Pointing to head) The Human Mind Reserve is a place where people come that want to save their mind from extinction.

PATIENT (smiling): Welcome to The Human Mind Reserve.

Throwback Thursday I

Took me some time to get started on this post. I knew what I wanted to write about but didn’t necessarily know how I was going to tap into that place. So I’m writing my Throwback Thursday on a Sunday night or early Monday morning rather. That’s life right? Everything doesn’t always happen how you envision it. I’m sure when my grandfather was growing up he didn’t see himself dying on an autumn day in August of 1976 in his Harlem apartment, from heroin overdose.

Ever since I learned that piece of information I’ve watched several documentaries and biopics about notorious drug king pins like; Bumpy Johnson aka the “Harlem Godfather”, Frank Lucas, and of course the “Mr. Untouchable” Nicky Barnes, founder of one the largest heroin trade organizations in NYC.

I gather based on the rapid influence heroin had on the inner NYC communities back in the 1970’s especially Harlem, I am not the only person who ponders over its gruesome effects on close family members. What a difference a few decades makes right? Harlem went from moving artistic heroes like Countee Cullen and Louis Armstrong to molding community heroes whose heroin flowed through veins like water and nostrils like oxygen. The New Negro Movement became:

Pregnant mothers fiending for another hit.

Spoons being lit…

with fire.

Naked women packing…

small plastic bags, while wearing masks and do-rags.

Drug lords pushing the potent product out to the masses,

while overused veins and an overworked heart collapses.

Every time I watch American Gangster I think of my grandfather’s life. Could it have been Frank Lucas’s famous Blue Magic that put my grandfather’s heart on overload, causing it to stop forever? Could he have been one of those buyers in the car?

Truth is I will never know. All I am left with is history and my infinite imagination. But what I do know is Black History is not just a month, its a lifestyle. It’s Harlem. It’s my grandfather. It’s where we’ve been and where we’re going. And although I never met him, he is and forever will be my Hero-in Harlem.

All week I’ve been getting pimp smacked by this word ACCOUNTABLE.

And the first thing that comes to mind is that image of the pope washing the feet of refugees. In case you haven’t seen it, here it is.

Now some of you may be saying to yourself, “What does the pope washing someone’s feet have to do with working out weekly?” or “I’m not going to be washing anyone’s stank feet to show I support them!” I don’t blame you, however here’s what my thinking was when it came to being physically fit and healthy:

If I am not where I want to be I only have myself to blame.

I have to push myself.

I have to go hard and workout everyday.

That mentality worked for a few months, twenty-four to be exact, now fast forward to January 26th 2017, three years later. Here I am talking to a good friend of mine on Facebook Messenger about our challenges. And lo and behold ACCOUNTABLE pops up!

Mind you this was before I reached the end of the Facebook Live video that he posted on his timeline. In the video he discussed his inconsistency in his workout regimen, asking his friends to hold him accountable (the exact word he used) for not only being physically fit and healthy but for making sure his actions line up with his words.

A few days later on January 29th, was video chatting with my mother and she was explained how being in her community ‘Biggest Loser’ group is helping her with her weight loss goals, and how her instructor really pushes her.

You get where I’m going yet? No? Okay let’s rewind to two weeks ago when I linked up with an ambitious co-worker willing to put in the work to meet her fitness goals. Monday-Wednesday we go straight from work to the gym. For the thirty to forty-five minutes that we are in the gym we are doing everything as a team. She wants to finish not only for herself but for me who is challenging her to push and visa versa. All I can say is WOW! What a difference it makes in your stride when you make yourself accountable for the people around you outside of family.

So what does Pope Francis, exercise, the word accountability, and Facebook messenger, have to do with each other?

The way I see it is in order for me to be physically healthy and fit I have to have the same mentality the pope had when washing feet of people he didn’t even know.

Bottom line is we were not created to survive as an individual.

We were not created to constantly tell ourselves:

If I am not where I want to be I only have myself to blame.

I have to push myself.

I have to go hard and workout everyday.

Our structure was not created to take on that much responsibility alone. And if you really think about it, that mentality is just as equivalent as washing someone’s stank feet!

So the key is before working out I must ask myself why. Is it a reason that expands beyond myself, beyond looking good? Or is it because I am accountable for my neighbor?
